Benchmarking - Standards, Exhibitions and talks, Styles, Summaries and Pre-Work, Supporting Activities, YOP vs Advanced Photography

One of the big drawback to doing a distance learning degree is that there are no real benchmarks as to what to aim for when submitting work at level 3, so when I heard that Colin was having an exhibition of his work, I decided to take the trip out to Essex to see it.
Colin is an OCA student who was doing the Advanced Photography module – before the YOP one,- and the exhibition was part of his submission.
His work was entitled Debenham Millennium and was being displayed in the towns art centre.
The work was about the merging of east and west and his images tended to merge the two worlds together.
It was good to get a students real view of how much a challenge level 3 was and the interactions and expectation of his tutor.
I got a few good pointers from the session but could have done with spending more time – our approaches were quite different but his seemed to pay off quite well with a score of 65 out of 100.

At a practical level, a good photograph is more about being in the right place at the right time and knowing what to take then the type of camera, skill and technique. My ambition is to show how anyone with a camera can produce great photographs when they visit London.
